After December 31, 2026, Office Online Server no longer receives security updates, bug fixes or technical support from Microsoft. SharePoint Server farms that rely on it for browser viewing and editing need a supported alternative.

Microsoft's announcement ↗
What changes on December 31, 2026

When Office Online Server retires, browser editing goes with it

Many organizations keep SharePoint Server on-premises so documents stay inside their own environment. When Office Online Server retires, those teams lose in-browser viewing and editing, and users fall back to downloading, editing on the desktop and uploading again.

BoldDocServer restores a direct workflow: open the file in SharePoint, work on it in the browser, and the changes go back to the same file. SharePoint keeps storage and permissions. Only the editing layer is new.

You have three options

Option 1Keep running Office Online Server

No security patches or fixes after 2026: an unsupported server in the middle of your document workflow.

Option 2Move documents to Microsoft 365

A cloud migration project, and a non-starter for teams that must keep content on-premises.

Option 3Replace only the editing layer

Keep SharePoint Server, your libraries and your permissions. Point SharePoint at BoldDocServer instead.

What is BoldDocServer?

Option 3, ready to deploy. BoldDocServer is a self-hosted WOPI application from Syncfusion that lets SharePoint Server users view and edit Word, Excel and PDF files in the browser. It takes over the browser editing that Office Online Server provided, while SharePoint keeps storage, permissions and versioning.

Why BoldDocServer

Four reasons SharePoint teams choose it

Keep SharePoint as it is

Libraries, permissions and versioning do not change. Only the editing layer is new.

Runs on Windows Server

BoldDocServer is a Windows container, so it runs on the same platform as your SharePoint farm, inside your network.

Prices you can see up front

$3.50 per user per month, falling to $2.10 with volume. Work out your exact cost with the pricing calculator, with no quote needed.

Built on Syncfusion's editors

The Document Editor, Spreadsheet Editor and PDF Viewer inside BoldDocServer are used in production by thousands of companies.

How it works with SharePoint

SharePoint stores the document. BoldDocServer edits it.

Here is what happens when someone opens a file. BoldDocServer integrates with SharePoint Server through WOPI, the protocol a document host uses to talk to a document application. SharePoint keeps the repository. BoldDocServer provides the browser-based viewing and editing.

More about how it works →

Your network

Open from SharePoint

A user opens a supported document from a SharePoint library. SharePoint launches BoldDocServer, which fetches the file through WOPI.

Work in the browser

The matching Syncfusion component, the Document Editor, Spreadsheet Editor or PDF Viewer, loads the file in the user's browser.

Save back to SharePoint

Changes are written back through WOPI, and SharePoint stores the updated document under the same permissions.

SharePoint keeps

  • Document libraries and storage
  • User permissions and repository access
  • Document management and versioning

BoldDocServer provides

  • Browser-based viewing and editing
  • WOPI communication and write-back
  • Collaboration capabilities where enabled
What your users can open

One server for Word, Excel and PDF

Users open Word, Excel and PDF files straight from their SharePoint library. Each format opens in a proven Syncfusion component in the browser, and edits are saved back to SharePoint.

What your users can do

A complete document workflow in the browser

Once a file is open, the whole job happens in the browser. No desktop editing application is needed for the BoldDocServer workflow. Users need only a modern browser with JavaScript enabled that can reach the BoldDocServer HTTPS endpoint.

  • Track changes with review, accept, and reject

Collaboration capabilities vary by document type and supported features.

Security and data control

Your documents stay in SharePoint, inside your network

That is why you kept SharePoint Server in the first place. BoldDocServer adds an editing layer without adding a new place where documents live.

More about security and data control →

Documents stay in SharePoint

BoldDocServer reads each file through WOPI and writes changes back to the same file. Libraries, permissions and versioning stay in SharePoint.

Runs inside your network

The Windows container runs on servers you manage, next to your SharePoint farm, so documents are processed in your own infrastructure.

HTTPS for every connection

HTTPS protects traffic between SharePoint, your users and BoldDocServer, including document content and WOPI requests.

Configuration you control

The SharePoint endpoint, certificates and secrets are supplied at deployment time. The same versioned image runs from test to production, and it can sit behind a reverse proxy.

Office Online Server replacement checklist

Six things to settle before December 31, 2026, whichever replacement you choose.

List what uses Office Online Server today

SharePoint Server is the usual one. Exchange Server and Skype for Business Server can use it too, so plan each workload.

Check your SharePoint version

BoldDocServer supports SharePoint Server 2016, 2019 and Subscription Edition.

List the formats people edit in the browser

Word and Excel editing and PDF viewing are available today. PowerPoint is coming soon.

Test with your own documents

Use a free trial to open your most complex files, such as templates, tracked changes and large workbooks, before you switch.

Plan certificates, network and the switch

The new editor needs an HTTPS endpoint that SharePoint and browsers can reach. Change the WOPI binding in a maintenance window, with a way back.

Compare licensing models

Per-user, per-connection and per-tab pricing give very different totals for the same farm. Model yours with real user counts.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about deployment, formats, pricing and the Office Online Server deadline.

What is BoldDocServer?

A server-side document solution that provides browser-based viewing and editing for DOCX, XLSX and PDF files stored in SharePoint Server. It's built on Syncfusion document components and integrates with SharePoint through WOPI.

What can replace Office Online Server for SharePoint Server?

There are three kinds of options: keep running Office Online Server without support after December 31, 2026; move your documents to Microsoft 365; or keep SharePoint Server and replace only the editing layer with a WOPI application such as BoldDocServer, Collabora Online, ONLYOFFICE Docs or ThinkFree.

Is BoldDocServer a drop-in replacement for Office Online Server?

For SharePoint Server, yes: BoldDocServer takes over browser viewing and editing through the same WOPI protocol. Office Online Server can also serve Exchange Server and Skype for Business Server. BoldDocServer is designed for SharePoint Server, so plan those workloads separately.

Does BoldDocServer replace SharePoint?

No. SharePoint remains your document repository and continues to handle libraries, storage, permissions and versioning. BoldDocServer provides the viewing and editing experience on top of it.

Where are my documents stored?

In SharePoint. BoldDocServer reads documents through WOPI and writes changes back to the same file, so content stays in your SharePoint libraries and inside your network.

Which document types are supported?

DOCX and XLSX for viewing and editing, and PDF for viewing, with annotations where enabled. Exact capabilities per format depend on the release; see the documentation for details.

Which SharePoint Server versions are supported?

BoldDocServer supports integration with SharePoint Server 2016, SharePoint Server 2019, and SharePoint Server Subscription Edition through the WOPI protocol.

Does it save changes automatically?

Yes. Changes are saved back to SharePoint through the WOPI write-back workflow, so users don't need to download or re-upload files.

How much does BoldDocServer cost?

$3.50 per user per month, billed yearly, with graduated volume pricing from 100 users, down to $2.10 per user per month above 500 users. The minimum order is 25 users, and you can try it free for 30 days first. Use the calculator on the pricing page to see the exact cost for your team.

Does BoldDocServer support PowerPoint files?

Not yet. Viewing and editing PowerPoint presentations is coming soon. Today BoldDocServer edits Word and Excel files and displays PDFs.

How is BoldDocServer different from Collabora Online and ONLYOFFICE?

BoldDocServer runs as a Windows container next to your SharePoint farm, is built on Syncfusion’s Document Editor, Spreadsheet Editor and PDF Viewer, and publishes per-user prices for every team size. Collabora Online and ONLYOFFICE Docs edit more formats today, including PowerPoint.

Does it support collaborative editing?

Collaboration is part of the product, including multiple users on a document, comments, replies and track changes. Available capabilities vary by document type and release.

How is BoldDocServer deployed?

As a Windows container from a versioned Docker image, on Windows Server inside your own infrastructure. Environment settings such as the SharePoint endpoint, certificates and secrets are supplied at deployment time.

Is HTTPS required?

Yes, for production. HTTPS should protect all communication between SharePoint, users and BoldDocServer, including document content and WOPI requests.

Can it run behind a reverse proxy?

Yes. BoldDocServer can be deployed behind a reverse proxy where supported by the deployment architecture.

When does Office Online Server support end?
